Technical Assistance and Financial Incentives
If you’re a landowner or producer interested in receiving technical and financial support to create shorebird habitat on your farm or property, there are a variety of ways to get more information. One of the best ways is to work directly with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Their field staff will come to your farm or land and help you make a plan for how to implement conservation practices for shorebirds and other wildlife as well as improved water and soil quality.
Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Programs
Conservation Stewardship Program
Landowners may also create habitat for shorebirds and other animals and ecosystems on farmland or associated lands, such as natural on-farm wetlands. The Conservation Stewardship Program, NRCS field staff will work with you to create a long-term conservation plan for a part or the whole of your land. More information about this program and who to contact here in Louisiana is available here.

Shorebirds of Louisiana Wetlands: Working Lands for Wildlife
This program is for landowners or producers looking to create habitat for shorebirds on their farmland post-harvest. Most of the farmers enrolled have rice and/or crawfish farms, but any leveed field is eligible. Technical and financial assistance are available. Learn more about the Working Lands for Wildlife Shorebirds of Louisiana Wetlands initiative here. Find your local NRCS office to discuss your options for your land here.
Manomet
Manomet has hosted a variety of habitat management workshops for public and private land managers hoping to create or enhance shorebird habitat where they live or work. We have a strong partnership with NRCS and would be happy to consult on both their programs and on land that may not meet their eligibility requirements but you would like to restore or manage all the same. For more information on what’s possible on your land, email ewojohn@manomet.org.
